The Stuttering Information Center of Denmark
The aim of the centreThe Aim of the centre is to improve the prevention and treatment of stuttering in Denmark, and to improve conditions in general for people in Denmark who stutter. To fulfil the aim, the centre means to ensure, that speech therapists, psychologists, stutterers and parents of stuttering children, public social workers, pre-school teachers, school teachers, employers, and others in Denmark will receive up-to-date knowledge about stuttering and the treatment of stuttering. The way to attain this goal is to systematically collect, adapt, develop and pass on knowledge about the causes, development, consequences, prevention and the treatment of stuttering. The background of the centreThe reason for establishing the centre was that the treatment of stuttering in Denmark has been decentralised to speech therapists in the municipalities and the recently established regions. The speech therapists' tasks are to treat all kinds of speech and language problems, not only stuttering. Some of the speech therapists only see a single, or a very few, stutterers per year - if any. This often results in a lack of knowledge about stuttering, and speech therapists feeling incapable of properly treating persons who stutter. No institutions has considered it as an aim to further educate speech therapists in the problems of stuttering, and there exists no institutions where speech therapists can be supervised if they have problems with treating a stutterer. And with the exception of the Associations for Stutterers in Denmark, there are no institutions with the resposibility of passing on knowledge about stuttering to stutterers, the public in general, public institutions, associations or ministries etc. Also the Association for Stutterers in Denmark is very small and run by people in their spare time, and who are therefore unable to deal with this demanding task professionally. The organisation of the centreThe centre, which was established January 1, 1994, has four employees: a director, who is educated as a psychologist, two staff members, one who are educated as speech therapists, one who are a ph.d. in psychology, and a secretary. The running cost is about 350.000 US Dollars per. year (2.100.000 DKK). The costs are covered by the Ministry of the Interior and Social Affairs in Denmark. The Stuttering Information Center of Denmark is run by a Board with 8 members. What the centre offers
